Keep It Fresh With Muskoka Grown
We aren’t going to shy away from the issue - we know one of the biggest complaints in Canadian cannabis is packaging. The industry has a problem, impacting the final quality of your bud and creating a tremendous amount of packaging waste, especially surrounding single-use plastics. An important, yet often-overlooked, feature of high quality cannabis packaging is its ability to keep the product fresh. Just like flavourful, fresh herbs, cannabis is subject to spoilage. If not done properly, terpene and cannabinoid content can decrease overtime and the bud can dry out, impacting the quality of the cannabis.
With quality at the forefront of everything we do, our packaging was selected with product quality, environmental sustainability, and consumer safety in mind. Set out to make a change from the beginning - we’re proud to introduce the first cannabis packaging for the recreational market in Canada using nitrogen to preserve terpene and cannabinoid content.
Experience a Quality Difference
Have you ever opened a new cannabis purchase, only to be overcome with disappointment from dry, crushed bud? With quality as a driving force behind our craft, finding a packaging solution that didn’t compromise on freshness was important to us. Sealed with nitrogen, our tins keep it fresh, unveiling a sweet aroma the first time you crack your favourite Muskoka Grown
.
The Secret Behind Nitrogen Packaging
Similar to your favourite munchies you grab at the grocery store, nitrogen is applied to our packaging process, pushing oxygen out to maintain freshness. Commonly referred to as ‘nitrogen flushing’ this method is used to maintain quality and freshness. Equally as important, nitrogen preserves and protects products from degradation during shipping and storage. Nitrogen packaging is the ideal standard for food grade packaging and now offers the best solution for fresh cannabis!
What is Nitrogen Flushing?
Nitrogen flush packaging is a technique used to extend the shelf life of dried foods by removing oxygen and replacing it with nitrogen. Before being sealed, oxygen is pushed out of the can by nitrogen. Replacing the oxygen with the nitrogen gas not only reduces oxidation and degradation of your product, but it will also increase it’s fresh shelf life. Unlike oxygen, Nitrogen will not react with organic matter and break it down.As fresh as the day it was packaged, the can provides a true seal preserving all the good things you’re looking for in your bud, keeping it dry, fresh and potent.
Is it Safe?
Never heard of nitrogen injection? Don’t worry, 70 percent of the air you breathe is made of nitrogen, so it’s completely safe! It also doesn’t affect the flavour, aroma or profile of the cannabis product. After being flushed with nitrogen, each can is promptly sealed with an easy to open pop-top lid, creating an air-right, odourless package. Using nitrogen gas to preserve food is widely accepted around the world as effective and safe, we’re excited to introduce it to the recreational cannabis market!
The Cannabis Benefits
Once a cannabis plant has been harvested, dried, and cured, its optimal freshness becomes a finite window that can be extended only by carefully controlling various elements. As fresh as the day it was packaged, our tin provides a true seal from the main things that degrade quality: sunlight, oxygen, moisture and heat. Additionally, the tins are durable enough to protect cannabis during transport, allowing unopened products to be stored without losing quality. Our method of packaging also protects against the growth of mould, yeast and aerobic bacteria.
While cannabis needs oxygen during growing and curing, storing your cannabis in an air-tight container is crucial to keeping it fresh and true to its original form. Elevated exposure to oxygen can also cause rapid cannabinoid degradation so it's important to keep it sealed in the proper container. With Muskoka Grown’s nitrogen seal, cannabis is protected from oxidation until the can is opened for the first time. From there, it’s up to you to ensure proper storage, keeping your cannabis as fresh as it can be!
Proper Cannabis Storage
Like a fine wine cellar or whiskey barrel, properly dried and cured cannabis is best when kept in a cool, dark place. While there is no exact expiration date for cannabis, if you store it well it should last about six months to one year before decreasing in quality, potency and flavor. To ensure your high quality buds remain that way, there are a few key elements to consider when storing your cannabis!
Temperature
Temperature can affect the degradation of cannabis in several ways. Ideally, cannabis should be stored in cool, dry locations with temperatures ranging from 40-72 degrees fahrenheit to avoid the growth of mould and mildew. Excessive heat can degrade cannabis quality, reducing the potency of trichomes, terpenes and cannabinoids, resulting in harsh smoke and an unpleasant flavor.
Moisture
High relative humidity can affect cannabis degradation by introducing moisture back into your bud. Excess moisture can cause dangerous bacteria and mold to form, and conversely, if your cannabis becomes too dry, it will also begin to degrade. Properly-maintained moisture levels can keep your cannabis fresh, potent and aromatic.
UV Light
While light is a necessity during cannabis growth, it’s not good for cannabis during storage. Ultraviolet light will bleach buds and increase temperature, breaking down cannabinoids, negatively affect terpene profiles and reducing potency. UV rays can break down organic matter at a rapid rate, causing cannabinoid degradation and loss to occur.
The Perfect Pair.
Along with the commitment to quality in every can, our packaging is sustainably made of a high-grade tinplate steel and aluminum. In the cannabis industry, it is estimated that 3.5 grams of flower, on average, comes with up to 78 grams of plastic packaging. Please remember to remove the label and plastic top to recycle the tin!
